our brand story

the beginning

It started with a knitting machine in Godalming.

The Alan Paine story began with a discovery. In 1907, William Paine came across hand-knitting machines in his country tailor’s shop in Godalming, Surrey and taught himself to knit. That spirit of curiosity laid the foundations for a brand rooted in heritage, quintessential English styling and quality that remains in our DNA.
